Horton Peak is a 9,896-foot summit in Idaho’s White Cloud Mountains within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, rising above the southeastern end of the Sawtooth Valley. Named for forest ranger William H. Horton, it is closely associated with the region’s forest protection history. Its most notable feature is the U.S. Forest Service fire lookout on the summit, built in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The lookout remained in use until the 1970s and still survives, connecting the mountain to the New Deal era and to long-standing efforts to watch over and protect the surrounding landscape.
