SS Kamloops was a Canadian Great Lakes freighter built in 1924 as a small canaller for package freight service between Montreal and Thunder Bay. In December 1927, after leaving the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, it entered Lake Superior during a severe storm and disappeared near Isle Royale with all 22 aboard. Wreckage and bodies later washed ashore, but the cause of the sinking was never determined. A note reportedly left by assistant stewardess Alice Bettridge deepened the tragedy’s haunting reputation. Lost for fifty years, the wreck was found in 1977 off Isle Royale, where it remains a significant dive and underwater archaeological site.
