Isle Royale National Park encompasses Isle Royale, more than 400 nearby islands, and much of the surrounding Lake Superior waters in northern Michigan. Established in 1940, this remote park preserves a landscape of boreal forest, rocky ridges, marshes, and inland lakes, with no roads and very limited vehicle use. Its history stretches back thousands of years, when Indigenous peoples hunted there seasonally and mined copper, leaving ancient pits and trenches. Later copper prospecting, logging, fishing, and small resort communities reshaped parts of the island before those uses ended and the forest recovered. The park is also known for preserved shipwrecks and its influential long-term wolf and moose research.
