Ishpeming Fire Tower stands on Greenstone Ridge in Isle Royale National Park as a remnant of the park’s early wildfire protection efforts. After the Greenstone Ridge Fire of 1936 burned part of the island, the National Park Service built fire towers there; when the earlier ones had badly deteriorated by the 1950s, this replacement was begun in 1961. The compact steel structure, assembled from prefabricated members, includes a stairway, balcony access hatch, and an enclosed cab with windows on all sides. Fire management changes ended its use by 1968, but it still reflects the park’s early approach to detecting and controlling wildfires and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.
