V. M. "Brownie" Moses and Vera Sapp Moses were business leaders and active citizens in Suwannee County from 1949 to 1990. They were well known in Florida livestock circles through thirty years of operating Moses Livestock Market in Branford, and they also owned the Texaco service station and ice business there while maintaining extensive farming and cattle operations in Suwannee and Lafayette counties. Brownie Moses served twelve years on the Branford Town Council, and Vera Moses served in church, educational, and civic organizations in the community. Remembered with their children Leona Wooley and Cregg Moses, they were rooted in families whose ancestors settled the Suwannee River Valley wilderness in the 1800s, cultivated crops, bred livestock, promoted timber, and established communities. Their story is tied to a belief that people are caretakers and tenants rather than owners, and that the land and its gifts belong to all and for all time, while generations have come and gone and the beauty and natural abundance of the Suwannee River Valley wilderness continue to flourish for all.
