Kolmer Site preserves the location of a Michigamea village established in 1720 in the American Bottom near Kaskaskia and Prairie du Rocher, within the network of Illini settlements shaped by contact with the French. In 1752, a confederation of Fox, Sioux, and Cherokees attacked the stockaded village, killing or capturing many inhabitants; survivors fled to Kaskaskia, and the burned settlement was not rebuilt. Because it was abruptly abandoned and never reoccupied, the site can preserve belongings left in place, giving it unusual value for understanding the late Illini period, French influence in the region, and dating other nearby French colonial sites.
