Owens River Headwaters Wilderness is a protected area in Inyo National Forest in eastern California, established on March 30, 2009, to safeguard the Owens River’s headwaters. Lying below San Joaquin Ridge, its unusually moist setting supports heavily forested ridges, wet alpine meadows, the region’s largest old-growth red fir forest, more than 100 natural springs and seeps, and Glass Creek Meadow, the largest subalpine meadow in the central eastern Sierra Nevada. The area is important for mule deer, pine marten, Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, Yosemite toads, butterflies, and trout. Human use reaches back about 10,000 years, including Native American obsidian gathering along Glass Creek.
