Reeds Gap State Park in Mifflin County occupies 220 acres in New Lancaster Valley along Honey Creek, where the stream cuts a natural gap through Hightop ridge. Long used first by wildlife, then by Native Americans, settlers, and local homesteaders for hunting, gatherings, and bush meetings, the gap remained an important community place into the 1920s. During the mid-19th-century lumber boom, Edward and Nancy Reed built a sawmill there that their family operated for years. After the timber was cut, Pennsylvania bought the land in 1905; part later became this park. Today it is valued for quiet recreation, including hunting, trout fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, and picnicking.
