Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary is a 253-acre protected landscape in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, managed by the Massachusetts Audubon Society along the Housatonic River. Established in 1975 through the donation of Mrs. Cooley Graves Crane’s estate, it preserves river meadow scenery, walking trails, birdwatching, and wildlife observation, and also includes a community garden with rentable plots for local residents. Its name reflects an older history, as Mohican people long landed canoes along this stretch of the river, a tradition also echoed in Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.’s nearby summer home. More recently, the sanctuary has been shaped by restoration work, including removal of the Sackett Brook dam and ongoing PCB cleanup.
