Bousquet Mountain in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is the oldest existing ski area in the Berkshires, opening in 1932 on Yokun Ridge in the Taconic Mountains. The site had been Clarence J. “Clare” Bousquet’s mink farm before the Great Depression ended that business and skiing began there with help from the Mount Greylock Ski Club. During the 1930s, the mountain expanded rapidly with multiple rope tows, night skiing, and snowmaking, and it became known as a highly mechanized eastern ski center. Bousquet also patented a rope tow gripper. After several ownership changes and later lift upgrades, the resort continues operating today with skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and related recreation.
