Arrowhead was the home of Herman Melville for thirteen years, from 1850 to 1863. Melville, who lived from 1819 to 1891, was a mariner and mystic and the author of Moby Dick, which was written in Pittsfield, along with other tales of the sea. Raymond M. Weaver called Moby Dick one of the few very notable literary achievements of American literature.
