Race Point Light, near the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown, Massachusetts, has warned ships along a dangerous coast since 1816 as the Cape’s third lighthouse. Its first 25-foot rubblestone tower used an early rotating beacon, and later improvements included a fourth-order Fresnel lens and added keeper housing. After the original tower deteriorated, the present 45-foot cast-iron, brick-lined tower replaced it in 1876. Electrified in 1957 and automated in 1972, the station reflects the shift from resident keepers to modern operation. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, it now serves as both an active aid to navigation and a heritage site with tours and overnight lodging.
