Sankaty Head Light stands at Nantucket Island’s easternmost point in Siasconset, where it was built in 1850 to warn ships away from the dangerous shoals off the island’s east coast. Its 60-foot tower originally combined brick and granite construction and was among the first lighthouses in the United States equipped with a Fresnel lens. The station was renovated in 1887, electrified in 1933, and fully automated in 1965, while its original lens was later preserved at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Threatened by bluff erosion, the lighthouse was moved inland in 2007, preserving a well-known Nantucket landmark that still serves navigation.
