Eagle Nest was said to be a place where members of several Indian tribes came to collect ceremonial feathers. Before 1919, Charles Springer acquired the land and built a dam for irrigation. It now has a capacity of 78,000 acre feet and provides irrigation for many farmers in eastern New Mexico. Today Eagle Nest State Park is known for its premier trout fishing.
