Eagle Nest Lake State Park in northern New Mexico, near Eagle Nest and east of Taos, was established in 2004 around Eagle Nest Lake, a 2,400-acre reservoir created in 1918 by damming the Cimarron River. The area also preserves traces of an abandoned 1907 railway extension project, including tunnel work that was never completed. At about 8,300 feet in a glacial valley on the slopes of Wheeler Peak, the lake is considered alpine and provides a scenic mountain setting. It is used year-round for fishing, boating, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, while surrounding waters and mountains support fish and wildlife important to recreation.
