Tonquin Valley in Jasper National Park, Alberta, is a backcountry valley famed for hiking, mountaineering, and the dramatic Ramparts above Amethyst Lakes near the British Columbia boundary and the continental divide. Named for the Pacific Fur Company ship Tonquin, destroyed in 1811, it was explored in 1915 by surveyor Morrison P. Bridgland. In the early 20th century it became a major recreation area, with routes, camps, outfitting, and Alpine Club huts that made it a well-known destination. It also remains important wildlife habitat, especially for mountain caribou, and recent closures and restrictions reflect growing concern for the endangered Tonquin herd.
