Built in 1896 by Civil War veteran William Harris of Union County, widely known as Uncle Billy Harris, the barn was made from cottonwood trees milled at the Union County sawmill on the Grand River in the eastern part of the county. The Shaun Kelly family from north of Afton donated the barn, and Howard Harris, Uncle Billy's grandson, donated the tools used to build it.
