The popular children's book series "Hank the Cowdog" grew from a real cowdog named Hank who lived and worked on the Y Ranch near rural Forgan. Hank worked alongside ranch hand John R. Erickson, who later became a well known author and used his talent and imagination to bring the stories to life. Like the fictional character who bears his name, the original Hank was responsible for ranch security, got into trouble, and was a loyal friend. He was a working ranch dog and beloved pet of longtime rural Forgan residents Mark and Billie Mayo.
