Middletown Village was the oldest settlement in New Jersey, originally the old Indian village of Chaquasitt. It was settled by the Dutch in 1613, and an English land claim was recorded in 1664. It served as a haven for Captain Kidd's pirates, was the scene of conflict between Tories and Patriots, and was the place where Clinton and Cornwallis met the day after the Battle of Monmouth.
