Ochlockonee River State Park is a 543-acre Florida park in the Panhandle south of Sopchoppy, where the Ochlockonee, Sopchoppy, and Dead River meet to form Ochlockonee Bay. Established in 1970, it occupies land used much earlier by Native American peoples of the Weeden Island culture between about 300 and 1000 AD, and later by the region’s turpentine industry, whose scarred “cat-faced” pines still survive. The park is valued for its near-coast pine flatwoods, live oak thickets, and golden wiregrass, and as habitat for endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers and other wildlife. Its tidal estuary also supports both freshwater and salt-tolerant species.
