Education
In 1889, George Clarke came to Hindman, licensed to practice law. Seeing the need of education, he established a subscription school with the help of the students and citizens. He became an educator, State School Inspector, and member of the State Board of Examiners. He died in 1940, and his epitaph reads: "Let God be praised and let Eastern Kentucky rejoice that so great a man once graced its soil."
