In 1796, Braxton Lee and his family settled on 640 acres along the Cumberland River. In 1807, Lee was commissioned captain of the 20th Tennessee Regiment, Davidson Militia, and he served for many years as a Justice of the Peace. Many early civic activities took place at the hillside homestead, built circa 1811. The Lowe, McQuary, and Adkisson families also lived on this site. Braxton Lee was the fourth-great grandfather of Governor William Byron “Bill” Lee.
