Edwin Schall, born at Greenlane Forge in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, on February 15th A.D. 1835, was consecrated to God in infancy by Holy baptism and established in the Christian faith at Norristown, Pennsylvania, by the Holy Ordinance of Confirmation on April 16th A.D. 1852. Remembered by his parents, William and Caroline Schall, as a dutiful son, an affectionate brother, a faithful friend, a brave soldier, an efficient officer, and a sincere Christian, he offered his services to his country at the outbreak of the Southern rebellion and served successively as Major of the 4th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers for three months and as Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel of the 51st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers for three years. He participated in the battles of Roanoke Island, New Bern, Camden, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Jackson, Campbell Station, Siege of Knoxville, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, and Cold Harbor, where, while gallantly leading on his men in the last of these, he was shot through the neck and instantly expired near Richmond, Virginia, on June 3rd A.D. 1864.
