First Airmail Delivery in New Jersey
Transportation
1
During the first week of August, 1912, the first airmail delivery in New Jersey took place between Ocean City and Stone Harbor. Flying the twenty miles in twenty-nine minutes, the Curtiss pusher single engine, chain driven twin propeller aircraft used the beach as a landing strip. Over 500 pieces of mail were delivered that week as part of a demonstration of the feasibility of airmail delivery. Six years later, in 1918, the US Post Office started regularly scheduled airmail service between Washington D.C. and New York.
