Avalon lies at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, a barrier island, where the dune and beach trail passes through a unique landscape and ecosystem that serves as a living classroom. The route leads through several biotic communities and offers a glimpse of what Lenape Indians and colonists may have encountered hundreds of years ago when they first visited the island. The area includes the maritime forest, dunes, and beach, and visitors are asked to stay on the established trail, keep off the dunes, and watch for poison ivy and burrs.
