Furman University’s relocation from downtown Greenville to the Poinsett Highway campus was marked by a plaza incorporating elements from the old campuses of Furman University and Greenville Woman’s College. Reconstructed concrete Block “F” seats had been popular student gathering spots on the downtown campus, and a stone water fountain was brought from that campus to this site. Stone columns recall those on the downtown campus, and the seals on the columns replicate those from the two downtown campuses. Ginko trees originally lined “Old Main,” and the bell tower on the lake replicates the most distinctive feature of the “Old Main” building on Furman’s downtown campus. The move unfolded with groundbreaking for the new campus in 1953, construction beginning in 1954, men and senior women relocating in 1958, and all students relocating to this campus in 1961. Key figures in the relocation included Alester G. Furman, Jr., chairman of the Board of Trustees, John Laney Plyler, president, Perry, Shaw, Hepburn, Kehoe and Dean, architects, and Daniel Construction Company, builders.
