Sussex County was established by act of the legislature on June 8, 1753, the Court of General Sessions and the Inferior Court of Common Pleas were set up by decree of Governor Jonathan Belcher in the name of King George II on October 13, 1753, and the first courthouse on this site was built in 1765.
