Black Butte is a prominent volcanic butte in northern California, formed about 9,000 to 10,000 years ago as overlapping dacite lava domes on the flank of the Mount Shasta volcanic system near Shastina. Rising beside Interstate 5 at Black Butte Summit, it became a familiar landmark and later a hiking destination known for broad views of Mount Shasta, Shastina, and distant peaks. Its history also includes a former Forest Service fire lookout on the summit and an important Southern Pacific railroad presence nearby, with stations and worker housing serving rail traffic through the Siskiyous. It remains significant for both geology and transportation history.
