The J.S. Wortham Company, Inc., stood on this site and was established circa 1909. James Stewart Wortham, of Ridgeway, NC, and Mary Lucy Green, of Warren County, NC, were married on May 26, 1894. Thirteen children were born to them, and their second child was Eleanor Quivous Wortham (Grady), mother of Marion Eleanor Grady (Coleman) and Charles Stewart Grady. The Worthams began married life in Ridgeway, where they raised cantaloupes for markets along the eastern seaboard. James Stewart Wortham served as Postmaster of Ridgeway from 1895 to 1897. After a very brief period as school teachers, they moved to Warrenton and established a business while continuing to farm. Charles Stewart Grady and his wife Theresa ("Terri") reside in the original home place, formerly known as "Wortham's Grove," adjacent to the Warrenton town limits on Ridgeway-Warrenton Road, and James Stewart Wortham and Mary Lucy Green Wortham are buried in the family cemetery on the property.
