Mount Van Hoevenberg, an Adirondack summit near Lake Placid named for Henry Van Hoevenberg, is important chiefly as a major winter sports center with deep Olympic ties. Its bobsleigh track was used in the 1932 Winter Olympics, and in 1980 the mountain hosted bobsleigh, luge, cross-country skiing, and biathlon. The site remains part of the Olympic Regional Development Authority and supports year-round recreation, including sliding sports, cross-country skiing, biathlon, hiking, and mountain biking. In 2023, expansion of the sports complex crossed onto adjacent Forest Preserve land, leading to a constitutional amendment and a narrowly approved 2025 referendum that added private land to the preserve.
