Mount Jo
Nature
Mount Jo, a two thousand eight hundred thirty-two-foot mountain in North Elba near Lake Placid, rises above Heart Lake and the Adirondack Loj on Adirondack Mountain Club land. Known as a short, accessible climb, it offers broad views of major Adirondack peaks, Indian Pass, and the Great Range from a relatively modest ascent. Its name preserves a personal loss: in 1877 Henry Van Hovenberg, builder of the original Adirondack Loj, named the mountain for his fiancée, Josephine Schofield, after she died shortly before their planned marriage. Both scenic and poignant, it has become a welcoming introduction to the High Peaks region.
