Just north of this spot beside the lake chosen as the very heart of the Adirondacks, Henry Van Hoevenberg created the original Adirondack Loj, an imposing log structure built of virgin timber cut on the site. He also built the principal trails radiating from here and pioneered the opening of the Adirondacks to wilderness lovers until the Loj was destroyed by the last great forest fires of 1903. Adirondack Loj and its founder are gone, but here in the heart of the eternal hills their spirit lives to inspire forever all lovers of the woods.
