At 10 A.M. on May 22, 1863, Benton’s Brigade advanced by the right flank to assault the Confederate lunette on the Baldwin’s Ferry Road through the ravine opening onto that road immediately in front of the lunette’s left face. From right to left, the brigade consisted of the 99th Illinois, 33rd Illinois, 8th Indiana, and 18th Indiana. As the regiments successively approached the head of the ravine, they encountered very severe fire, then took position in front of both faces of the lunette and the curtain south of it, with the 99th Illinois around the salient angle, the 18th Indiana on its right, the 33rd Illinois on the left of the 99th Illinois, and the 8th Indiana farther left. Detachments of the 33rd Illinois and 8th Indiana crossed the railroad and took position in front of the Confederate railroad redoubt. These positions were held until parts of the brigade were relieved by Sanborn’s brigade or, for those not previously relieved, until after dark when they retired. Casualties were 72 in the 33rd Illinois, 102 in the 99th Illinois, 117 in the 8th Indiana, 47 in the 18th Indiana, and 3 wounded in the 1st United States serving siege guns, for an aggregate of 341, including Lieut. Thomas J. Kinman killed; Capt. Eli R. Smith and Lieut. William Gray mortally wounded; Capts. Andrew O’Daniel, Frederick S. Wysong, and Hiram T. Vandevender killed; and Major John C. Jenks and Lieut. John L. Lowes mortally wounded.
