On May 22, 1863, Stevenson's Brigade, with fixed bayonets, formed in two regimental columns by divisions in a ravine before the Confederate line, with the 7th Missouri and 81st Illinois on the right, the 8th Illinois and 32nd Ohio on the left, and the 17th Illinois deployed in front as skirmishers. About 10 A.M., the columns moved to the assault, the right led by Capt. Buchanan and the left by Col. Sturgess, and both advanced near the Confederate entrenchment. The left column was then halted and ordered to form a reserve while the right was ordered to form line, with the 81st Illinois on the left of the 7th Missouri. Under heavy fire, the men were ordered to lie down, and after the fire slackened the command was ordered forward again. The 7th Missouri and 81st Illinois advanced close to the ditch of the redoubt, and some men of the 7th Missouri carrying scaling ladders got into the ditch, but severe Confederate fire forced both regiments to retire and reform. The other regiments held their positions until ordered to camp at nightfall. Casualties were 23 in the 8th Illinois, 26 in the 17th Illinois, 98 in the 81st Illinois, 102 in the 7th Missouri, and 23 wounded in the 32nd Ohio, for an aggregate of 272 killed and wounded, including Col. James J. Dollins, Lieuts. Zebedee Hammack, William L. Farmer, and Hugh Warnock killed, and Capt. Cornelius S. Ward and Lieut. Abraham L. Lippincott mortally wounded.
