El Capitan is a 9,901-foot mountain in the Sawtooth Range of central Idaho, within the Sawtooth Wilderness of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Rising above the eastern end of Alice Lake, it forms part of the rugged skyline there. The peak stands south-southeast of Peak 10,052, its line parent, and lies between Snowyside Peak to the west and McDonald Peak to the east. From Alice Lake’s surface at about 8,600 feet, El Capitan rises prominently, and the area is commonly reached by a moderate trail from Pettit Lake, which begins at around 7,000 feet in elevation.
