John A. Martin was born at Brownsville, Pa. on March 10, 1839, and died at Atchison, Kas. on Oct. 2, 1889. He was a soldier and statesman who served as Colonel of the 8th Kansas Volunteers and as Brevet Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers. He was also editor and publisher of the Atchison Champion from 1858-1889 and Governor of Kansas from 1885-1889, and he was remembered for his public and private virtues.
