From 1917 to 1919, citizens of Salem served their country in World War I. Those honored were Ernest M. Beebe, Lawrence W. Beebe, Nathan Buchalter, Samuel Buchalter, George E. Day, Edward H. Dewolf, Nathan Eisenstein, Daniel M. Fraser, James Harrington, Victor G. Hehr, Isaac Heilweil, John Huderewiga, Louis Hirsham, Arthur Kingsley, Thaddeus M. Kuzdrall, George W. Moore, Theron E. Morgan, E. Austin Rix, Jr., Abraham Schaeffer, Louis Schaeffer, Harry Schmuckler, Anton Sliwa, and Earl L. Way. The memorial was made possible by the F.N. Harris bequest and dedicated November 11, 1934.
