Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey, grew from Warner LeRoy’s 1974 vision of a broad entertainment resort into one of the world’s largest theme park properties. The site opened with an amusement park and safari and became known early for record-setting attractions and oversized themed scenery. After Six Flags acquired it in 1977, the park shifted toward major thrill rides and built a reputation as a leading coaster destination. Its history also includes deadly accidents in 1984 and 1987 that led to wider safety scrutiny and changes in amusement ride standards. With the later addition of a water park and combined safari operations, it became a major multi-attraction resort.
