Green Mountain Lookout stands on the summit of Green Mountain in Washington’s Glacier Peak Wilderness as a 1933 Civilian Conservation Corps-built fire lookout. This small wood-frame structure, designed for fire detection and built to endure strong mountaintop winds, survived repeated weather damage and underwent major repairs in 1950 and again after serious deterioration in the 1990s and 2000s, including dismantling and helicopter removal for restoration before reconstruction in 2009. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, it later became the focus of a major legal and political fight, symbolizing the tension between wilderness protection and historic preservation.
