Spesard Knob is a remote protected wildland in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests of western Virginia, south of New Castle in the Appalachian Mountains. Recognized by The Wilderness Society as a Mountain Treasure, it has drawn conservation attention because it lacks inventoried roadless protection despite its ecological value. The area contains possible old-growth forest, unfragmented black bear habitat, and a shale barren associated with the Appalachian grizzled skipper. Part of the Craig Creek Cluster, it also serves as a wildlife corridor linking nearby wildlands. Its rugged terrain, streams, and limited access help preserve its largely undeveloped character, though wildfire burned much of its north side in 2008.
