Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects an estuarine landscape at the mouth of the Siletz River on the Oregon coast. Established in 1991, it was created largely to restore salt marsh that had been altered by diking and ditching for agriculture and dairy pasture. Restoration near Millport Slough reopened tidal flow by breaching and removing dikes, filling ditches, and adding woody debris to improve fish habitat, while traces of the altered marsh remain visible along U.S. Route 101 in stands of salt-killed trees. The refuge also supports birds including red-tailed hawks, bald eagles, great blue herons, and great egrets, and now offers limited public access by trail and non-motorized boat launch.
