The Bill of Rights sets out protections for religion, speech, the press, peaceful assembly, and petition; preserves the right to keep and bear arms; bars the quartering of soldiers in private homes without consent except as prescribed by law in wartime; protects people, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures and requires warrants based on probable cause; provides for grand jury indictment in serious crimes except in certain military cases, forbids double jeopardy and compelled self-incrimination, guarantees due process, and requires just compensation for property taken for public use; guarantees in criminal prosecutions a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury, notice of the accusation, confrontation of witnesses, compulsory process for favorable witnesses, and assistance of counsel; preserves jury trial in common-law suits over twenty dollars; forbids excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishments; affirms that enumerated rights do not deny others retained by the people; and reserves undelegated powers to the states or to the people.
