Tumalo Falls is a 97-foot waterfall on Tumalo Creek west of Bend in Oregon’s Cascade Range, within Deschutes National Forest. The surrounding landscape was formed over millions of years by volcanic activity and, during the Pleistocene, by glaciers that carved the canyon below. At the falls, Tumalo Creek plunges over a resistant lava lip into the glacier-cut gorge. The name Tumalo may derive from Klamath words meaning wild plum, ground fog, or icy water. Today the area is managed for day use, with a short trail to a viewpoint and routes continuing to other cascades, making it a popular destination for hiking, biking, picnicking, and scenic viewing.
