West Mountain stands as an isolated peak in Utah County on the southern shore of Utah Lake, separate from the main Wasatch Range despite lying on its southern segment. Rising to 6,912 feet, it has become important chiefly as a communications hub rather than a recreation site. Its most conspicuous structure is an old AT&T Long Line microwave tower, a surviving piece of an earlier relay network. The mountain also supports broadcast and cellular transmitters, emergency and government communications facilities, and a ham radio repeater. In addition, Brigham Young University’s West Mountain Observatory, built in 1981, uses three telescopes there for student astronomy.
