Big Branch Wilderness is a protected tract in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest and one of the forest’s eight designated wilderness areas. Created by the Vermont Wilderness Act of 1984 and expanded by the New England Wilderness Act of 2006, it now encompasses 6,725 acres managed by the U.S. Forest Service. A section of the Long Trail, coinciding here with the Appalachian Trail, crosses the area from Griffith Lake to Ten Kilns Brook, while other trails add to its appeal as a backcountry destination. With several summits above 2,500 feet, including 3,043-foot Mount Tabor, it preserves forested mountain landscape for low-impact recreation and conservation within the National Wilderness Preservation System.
