Robert T. Stafford White Rocks National Recreation Area in southern Vermont lies within the Green Mountain National Forest and encompasses the Peru Peak and Big Branch wilderness areas, making protected backcountry a central feature of the landscape. Established by the Vermont Wilderness Act of 1984, it was renamed in 2006 for Robert T. Stafford, a former Vermont governor who also served in the U.S. House and Senate. The area is known for hiking, camping, and winter travel, with a 30-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail, 61 miles of maintained snowmobile trails, and notable natural features including Chaos Canyon, a cleft created by a massive quartzite rockslide.
