In 1852 the Territorial legislature created Bernalillo County, and because much of the area was farmland, the county seal used sheep to represent the eight original Spanish and Mexican land grants there: Pajarito, Alameda, San Pedro, Elena Gallegos, Lo de Padilla, Antonio Sedillo, Atrisco, and Chilili. Descendants of these original families still live, work, and play in Bernalillo County and New Mexico.
