Thomaston's original town center stood at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Route 131 South, known as the Lower Corner, before the center moved west to its present location in the mid-nineteenth century. The old buildings have changed little over the years and retain their exterior charm. The original sidewalk was made of wood planks, and although the road has since been paved, the character of the business district remains substantially unchanged, though more encumbered by traffic and by electric and telephone lines.
