Former bookseller Henry Knox became a respected military strategist, artillery expert, and friend of George Washington, serving with him in most campaigns during the Revolutionary War. He is best known for hauling 60 tons of cannon from Ft. Ticonderoga, NY, to Dorchester Heights, MA, in the winter of 1776 to drive the British troops out of Boston Harbor. When the British withdrew their last troops from New York on November 21, 1783, Knox headed the American forces that took over. He stood by Washington during his farewell address on December 4th, and became the senior officer of the army. Knox went on to serve as Secretary of War, first under the Articles of Confederation, and then in Washington's cabinet. In 1795, Knox retired to Montpelier, the estate he built in Thomaston on land inherited by his wife, Lucy Flucker Knox. General Knox died suddenly in 1806. The graves of Henry Knox, Lucy, and their family were moved to this Village Cemetery in 1855.
