Lone Peak Wilderness is a 30,088-acre protected mountain area in Utah’s central Wasatch Range, established in 1978 and for several years the state’s only federally designated wilderness. Spanning parts of Utah and Salt Lake counties, it rises above the Wasatch Front as a dramatic alpine backdrop to the urban corridor below. Its rugged landscape includes narrow canyons, exposed ridges, cirque basins, glaciated high summits, small lakes, and reservoirs, with well-known peaks including the Pfeifferhorn and Lone Peak. Plant life shifts with elevation, and strict wilderness protections and watershed rules limit vehicles, equipment, camping, swimming, and domestic animals in parts of the area.
